William Eric Freeman – The Richmond Observer – NEWSWV – NEWSWV
Eric passed away unexpectedly on October 23, 2022 at the age of 69.
He is survived by his 29-year-old wife, Beth McNair Freeman; and he was preceded in death by his parents, William Thurman Freeman and Dorothy “Dot” Gaddy Freeman.
Born in Kanawha County, West Virginia, Eric moved to Hamlet in the second grade. Eric had many fond memories of his childhood in Hamlet. He kept reminiscing about his glory days playing baseball and football with his teammates. Eric especially loved going to Shallotte and spending time with his cousins on their grandfather’s fishing boat, the Harriet B.
After graduating from Hamlet High School, Eric attended NC State before earning his Masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado.
Eric made Colorado his home and worked for (Lockheed Martin) Martin Marietta Aerospace for over 30 years. Eric has worked on several high profile programs that have earned him many awards and accolades.
Living in Colorado was perfect for Eric’s adventurous side. He loved the mountains! Climb a 14,000-foot mountain, whiz down a ski slope, hike the trails, or just snap photos. Eric was always up for adventure or mischief, rock and fossil hunting, camping, Night of Fire and Thunder at Bandimere Speedway with the best fuel dragsters or trying his hand at pyrotechnics. Sometimes just pulling out his high-powered telescope and looking up at the sky was enough to make him happy.
Eric and Beth moved to Rockingham after Eric tried again and were happy to have their lakeside home close to family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday 2 November 2022 at First Presbyterian Church, Hamlet. The family greets friends after the service outside of church at Eric’s Memory and the reception at the chapel.
Please plant a tree in Eric’s memory or erect a memorial at First Presbyterian Church, 200 Rice St., Hamlet, NC 28345.
